Observing National CNA Week

Certified nursing assistants were recognized with special appreciation at Bridge View Nursing Home on June 19, during National CNA Week. In addition to other events being held that week, Elemental Touch led two in-service classes on “Skilled Touch” for CNAs and other staff, followed by an afternoon of chair massage.

Skilled touch classes are brief, but demonstrate how touch can instantly convey comfort and connection. Participants were led through a focusing technique and then practiced using gentle, aware touch on one arm. When they compared the touched arm to the arm that was untouched, most felt a difference, describing the sensations as “relaxing” or “lighter”. Aware touch can be a tool to use with residents before transitions, when helping them get dressed, or when they may be anxious. Plenty of research supports such use.

In the afternoon, chair massage sessions were provided for staff that had been leaders in a quality care initiative supported by 1199 SEIU (Service Employees International Union), which funded the special event.
